Technology for Personalised
& Project-Based Language Learning
This one day workshop gives participants a chance to explore and apply a range of ideas for better engaging High School students during the compulsory year(s) of language learning. The workshop is presented by Steve Collis, award-winning language teacher and senior presenter at Sydney Centre for Innovation in Learning.
The ideas include:
- creating a web portal offering options to students
- creating videos that students can access at the point of need (sometimes called "flipped learning")
- using animoto (small cost involved) to create promotional videos and launch exciting units
- using publishing platforms (YouTube, Lulu, Weebly) so student creativity can have a real audience
- using Edmodo to link students with their peers in countries where the target language is spoken
All the ideas presented have been implemented successfully over a number of years at Northern Beaches Christian School. Participating teachers will have a chance to talk to the students and seek their perspectives.
Session #1 Exploring the Ideas
Get hands on exploring 5 sample courses from Year 8. See how the technology comes together in the context of personalised and project-based learning units delivered to 160 Year 8 students in their compulsory year of language study (French). Visit the students in class and explore their perspectives on the units and techniques,
Session #2: Getting Set Up
Participants go about selecting specific ideas to try out and sign up with the relevant online services, getting familiar with the interfaces with troubleshooting support available.
Session #3: Building a Plan
Participants have time to create content or a program plan for exploiting some of the ideas presented in Session #1. The day finishes with a sharing of each participant's progress and ideas.
Steve Collis | Director of Innovation
Steve joined NBCS in 2002 teaching English and French, and quickly attracted recognition in awards for ‘Excellence by a Teacher’ (National Quality Schools Awards) and ‘Microsoft Innovative Teacher of the Year’. He joined the NBCS leadership team soon after, promoting innovation school-wide, and delivering training programs and workshops at schools around Australia and beyond. Steve helps colleagues re-envision virtual and physical spaces to facilitate personalised learning and increased student engagement and agency.

Completing Technology for Personalised
& Project-Based Language Learning will contribute 5 hours of QTC Registered PD addressing standard descriptor 3.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
