SESSIONS 1 & 2

Session #1 - Introduction to the Course & Design Scoping

This is session is an introduction to the course and the purpose of the design/engage kit. Participants meet the design/engage kit and consider the sorts of design they might undertake with it during the term. Typical examples include unit redesign, a lesson redesign, new uses of a virtual learning environment or physical environment.

  • introduction to design/engage as essentially "a bag of ideas" filtered against vision + people
  • the value of shared language when designing collaboratively
  • the how & why of a design scope statement
  • an introduction people-centered design and iterated design
  • Prezi-tool ICT submission.

Session #2 - Methods for Gathering and Making Visible "People-Insights"

In this session we examine methods for capturing and making visible insights about who we are as teachers and about who our students are and what they might need. Participants can use these techniques throughout the term to anchor and test their designs.

  • Start with self: reflection activity, and shared vision/values.
  • Methods for gathering insights and building empathy for students, including interviews, surveys and co-creating.
  • Building user personas and the relevance of "extreme" personas
  • Google survey ICT submission.

Optional ICT submission for QTC Registered PD:

To qualify for the completion of Module 1 as QTC registered D in NSW, you will need to submit a Prezi showing your use of the "People" board and/or a screenshot of your ICT survey strategy.

QTC Registered PD (For teachers in NSW)

Completing Design/Engage Master Class MODULE 1 Know Your People will contribute 4 hours of QTC Registered PD addressing standard descriptors 1.1, 1.3, 1.5, 3.7, 6.1, 6.3,  from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Module 2   Creating a Learning Narrative

SESSIONS 3 & 4

Session #3 - Storyboarding Ideas for a Shared Learning Narrative for Students

In this session we zoom in on 4 of the design/engage cards exchange ideas and generate new ones. Whatever ideas we generate, participants can "test" them with students over the coming week before creating a promotional video using Animoto.

  • introduction to Big Idea, Entry Event, Mountain Top and Immersion cards..
  • idea generation for all the cards
  • the conceptual relevant of learning to students
  • introduction to "prototyping" and testing ideas with students.
  • a sneak peak at Animoto as a complementary ICT tool.

Session #4 - Using Technology to Enhance the Shared Learning Narrative

In this session, after debriefing about our research from last week, participants either use Animoto to create media to support their design OR explore a web-publishing tool to operate as a "Mountain Top" space for students to showcase their work.

  • Creating videos with Animoto
  • Web publishing (with Weebly, Lulu, YouTube, or other technology)

Optional ICT submission for QTC Registered PD:

To qualify for the completion of Module 2 as QTC registered PD in NSW, you will need to submit an Animoto video and/or a screenshot or URL to the web publishing site.

Module 3   Personalise the Journey

SESSIONS 5 & 6

Session #5 - Figuring out How Students are Different

We revisit our student personas in the context of a particular learning design context (e.g. a particular subject and unit), seeking insights into what the real "dilemmas" are in terms of non-compatible needs in the room. This sets the scene for considering logistical structures to allow different students to have different experiences:

  • the "Guru" card - ideas for giving different students different experiences of expert input.
  • the "Matrix" card - publishing well scaffolded alternative activities and then having students consult the resulting Matrix.
  • the "Passion" card - establishing a process scaffold that allows students to identify a challenge or topic and locate their own resources.

Participants select one of these ideas and test a minimal version of it with students during the week.

Session #6 - Publishing Scaffolding on a Web Portal

The complexity of offering structured choice and options to students generally requires a well laid out "map" or published plan that students and teachers alike can consult to keep track of activity. That published plan can include links to sources of expertise - 3rd party sources or home-made video/audio recordings.

In this session we look at digital techniques for capturing expert and methods for laying out materials on a web portal that students can consult.

ICT Elements:

  • creating instructional video or audio with a phone, ShowMe, Explain Everything, or similar
  • creating a Matrix with Word, Weebly or other tools

Optional ICT submission for QTC Registered PD:

To qualify for the completion of Module 3 as QTC registered PD in NSW, you will need to submit an instructional video sample and/or a screenshot or URL of a Matrix in Word or Weebly or other tool.

Module 4   Shape the Habitat

SESSIONS 7 & 8

Session #7 - An Introduction to the Habitat Cards

We meet and explore the design/engage habitat cards and map them to various examples in physical and virtual space:

  • Cave, Campfire, Watering Hole cards
  • Empty, Maker, Outside cards

We also discuss a 3rd space "Cultural" space, represented in the kit by the tree on the people board, and consider what norms and values are established in our classes and how these translate into the environment and routine behaviours.

Participants have a choice of ICT elements to pursue: either to timelapse their class during the week or to focus on the us of Skype, Thinglink or Blendspace.

Session #8 - Course Debriefing & Final ICT Tutorial

In the first half of the session participants can either work on their ICT submissions or analyse their timelapse or envision a "new habitat" for their students.

  • using a timelapse camera function as a research and discovery tool
  • bringing spaces together on a learning landscape with Weebly and visual tools such as Blendspace or Thinglink
  • using Skype to transcend physical space

In the final half hours we look back at all parts of the design/engage kit and consider how the various ideas and process might be stitched together to create new designs that work better for more students.

Optional ICT submission for QTC Registered PD:

To qualify for the completion of Module 4 as QTC registered PD in NSW, you will need to submit a timelapse video or a reflection based on a timelapse video, or a screenshot of a learning landscape with either Weebly, Blendspace, Thinglink or a similar tool, or reflection notes after using Skype to connect with experts outside the classroom.

Tutorial:
Use Thinglink or Blendspace to bring together sophisticated combinations of resources into clear, visually appealing graphical landscapes on your web portal.
